MGM released a DVD edition of “The Respectable, the Awful and the Homely” in the slow 1990s, but it had few extras, a mono soundtrack, and a scratched print. Finally, MGM has given Sergio Leone’s Western legend the double-disc special edition it deserves. The print is restored and as sure as I’ve ever seen it, the sound is now an incredible 5.1 Surround (listen to the glass falling off Tuco after he springs through the window in the opening sequence!) nineteen minutes of footage from the Italian unique have been restored, and the discs are packed with extras. Even the packaging is great: a sturdy interlocking box, with the DVDs kept in the upper and bottom parts of the two lids. Also inside the box are cards containing posters for the film in five different countries.

The film, like most of the European Westerns of the 1960s, was critically disregarded in its day. The Modern York Times said of it: “the most expensive, pious, and repellent movie in the history of its odd genre. There is scarcely a moment’s respite from the injure.” It’s unbelievable how people missed the brilliance of this movie, which turned Western conventions upside down in such a wonderfully bizarre, European procedure. Now the film is considered a classic, and only Sergio Leone’s absorb “Once Upon a Time in the West” (another immense 2 DVD plot, by the scheme) has more respect in the genre. Leone’s exclusive style — stretched out time, obsession with close-ups and outrageous wide-shots, focus on rituals, and expend of Morricone’s wild and avant-garde gain — are all in rotund force in this memoir of three treasure-seekers searching for a cache of gold coins on the Texas-New Mexico border during the Civil War. The implacable and unflappable ‘hero’ Blondie (Clint Eastwood), the crazy amusing bandit Tuco (Eli Wallach), and the calculating injurious sadist Angel Eyes (Lee Van Cleef) unfriendly each other’s paths amidst the senseless violence of the war. Leone perfectly contrasts the self-interested men with the greater backdrop of the tragedy of war. It’s a strangely emotionally affecting characterize despite its focus on three men who are calm from normal society and seem not to care about anything but money. So many individual scenes stand out for their virtuosity that the movie a parade of “greatest hits.” Most fantastic of all is “The Ecstasy of Gold” sequence where Tuco dashes madly through a cemetery, looking for the grave that might have the gold. Morricone’s music here is especially overwhelming.

Nineteen minutes of footage have been restored that were never shown in the American prints. The scenes integrate perfectly into the film, and after seeing them once, you won’t be able to imagine they were ever missing. Among the scenes are Angel Eyes visiting a destroyed fort; Tuco hiring bandits to attend him lunge Blondie; Blondie and Angel Eyes having a face-to-face when they first region out together to gather the gold; and some extra conversation between Tuco and Blondie in the desert. However, these scenes were never dubbed into English in the 1960s. Therefore, the DVD producers had to newly dub them. Eli Wallach and Clint Eastwood do their occupy voices. An actor named Simon Prescott does the imitation of the deceased Lee Van Cleef. Admittedly, Wallach and Eastwood no longer sound the same, but I couldn’t imagine someone else imitating their voices — it couldn’t have been done any other plot. Prescott is pleasing trustworthy as Angel Eyes, if a bit more gravelly.

Disc 1 has audio commentary by Richard Shickel, a film historian who wrote Eastwood’s biography and also did commentary on Leone’s “Once Upon a Time in America” DVD. His comments can be resplendent dry, and he focuses mostly on Leone’s style and techniques instead of on background information on the filming itself. Nonetheless, there are many captivating insights, and Shickel manages to say a lot during the three-hour running time.

Most of the extras are on Disc 2:

“Leone’s West” — A 20-minute documentary about the making of the film. Includes interviews with Shickel, producer Alberto Grimaldi, author of the English dialogue Mickey Knox, and best of all, Eastwood and Wallach. There’s some very enchanting info and memories here, mostly from Knox and the two actors.

“The Leone Style” — A 23-minute documentary, really impartial an extension of the first one. It spends more time on Leone’s novel techniques. The same interviewees appear here.

“The Man Who Lost the Civil War” — A 14-minute documentary that was produced separately from the DVD. It makes no mention of the movie, but is about its historical backdrop: the disastrous General Sibley campaign in Texas. Sibley appears in the film briefly, and this short documentary gives the viewer an primary insight into the world of Blondie, Tuco, and Angel Eyes.

“Reconstructing The Great, the Abominable and the Gruesome” — An 11 exiguous examine into the painstaking work eager with fixing the represent and sound, restoring the sever scenes, and re-dubbing it.

This movie has it all. It has action, drama and even some funny relief in it. It is a timeless classic that is unforgettable. When I first saw it, I was a microscopic kid and couldn’t truly devour it as I can now at age 22.

Blondie (The Man with No Name) isn’t your typical kindly guy. He mainly does things that suits his believe agenda. However, when compared to the murderous Angel Eyes and the greedy Tuco, Blondie is a saint. This yarn involves bloodshed, shoot-outs, search for esteem, and double-crossing. And it all takes region while the Civil War is going on, which makes things a lot more “engaging” for the noted three. The West has never been wilder or more unpredictable than it is now. With an fantastic come by, marvelous acting, and ample story-telling, this is one memorable film that you will never forget.

As I said in the beginning, the first time I saw this was when I was a shrimp kid. When I objective recently purchased this fresh edition of the movie, it truly was like I was watching it for the first time. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach are intelligent in their roles, and a lot of props need to go to Lee Van Cleef as he is absolutely chilling in his role.

This current edition really does the film the justice it deserves. The film has been restored to the director’s current vision as noteworthy as possible, giving you an extra 18 minutes. You will leer the added scenes as the voices have been re-dubbed (the first time you will eye this will throw you, as I believe that specific section has the worst re-dubbing, but the other added scenes are done a lot better, even if you detached peruse it) . The portray looks extraordinary and the sound is enormous. Extras included are commentary from Richard Schickel, a couple of documentaries and featurettes, poster gallery, deleted scenes and the unusual theatrical trailer. Along with the nice packaging, you score an 8-page booklet that includes pictures from the film along with Roger Ebert’s most new review of the film. And, you pick up some mini-posters included inside the packaging as well. A grand edition of the movie, without examine.

“The Splendid, the Abominable and the Shocking” is a pure triumph in filmmaking and should be seen by everybody at least once. Don’t let the fact that this is a Western throw you. I contemplate this can be enjoyed by everybody, and even by those who are not spacious fans of Westerns. As a fan of Asian cinema, I’ve often wondered why I haven’t reviewed more Japanese anime. Faded anime has very complex storylines that can save most movies to shame. “VEXILLE” (a.k.a. Vexille 2077 Nihon Sakaku, Isolation) is from the same folks responsible for Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C.. Director Fumihiko Sori and writer Haruka Handa’s latest is a blend of veteran 2 dimensional animation and 3-D effects that gives us a vision of a futuristic world. People who saw Appleseed may behold the similarities to Masamune Shirow’s futuristic designs since they both worked on the 2004 hit inviting film.

The anecdote in “Vexille” begins as Daiwa Industries leads Japan in technological advancements as an attempt for Imperial Aspirations (recalls Japan in WWII) . Daiwa began experimenting in grievous cloning, bio-engineering human tissue to combine with machine parts. Inflamed with these experiments, the U.N. orders Japan to halt all activities. In retaliation, Japan sanctions a rule of total isolation from the rest of the world, and the country even goes as far as generating a magnetic force field around its borders.

After 10 years, American intelligence intercepts information that Japan has developed a way that can turn humans into cyborgs. A shaded ops group called “S.W.O.R.D.” is sent to infiltrate isolated Japan to come by the truth of this matter and cessation it if important. Vexille, one of the commando units sent to Japan soon finds herself the lone survivor who may be able to halt Daiwa with its contemptible plans. She hooks up with Maria and her gang of renegades to infiltrate Daiwa. But is Maria more than what she seems? The hideous secret may be more than they bargained for….

I’ve read that “Vexille” wasn’t such a expansive hit when it came out in Japan. Perhaps, anime fans experienced some “cyberpunk” overload because there are quite a lot of features that note a futuristic world with “mechas” involved; or maybe because the residence in “Vexille” portrays the country as a “rogue” government in the world’s eyes. I wouldn’t know the just reason. But this modern work by Sori and Handa seemed too similar to Shirow’s past works. It incorporates familiar themes of the usual corporate entity that wants to play God, a strong-willed, gutsy but lovely heroine, futuristic military weaponry and the premise of man vs. machine or the morality of man and machine. The film may actually be homage to Masamune Shirow.

The animation in “Vexille” is kind of a mixed bag. I loved the fact that the characters don’t have the usual over-expressive “bulging” eyes, exclusive colored hair and perfect complexion. Vexille and Maria (as well the entire supporting cast) looked almost realistic in their features, it sidestepped the usual anime conventions that we’re primitive to in the past. Their movements are also very fluid and peaceful that outshines the motion assume in “Beowulf” but comes a lot short of the quality of the astonishing animation in “Final Fantasy: Advent Children”. I also found it a bit droll that Americans looked like they’re mixed and smooth looked a tad Asian. (Not complaining, impartial stating an observation) Also, I saw this film in its unique Japanese language; declare actors Yasuko Matsuyuri as sexy rebel, Maria (This character makes me want to become a cartoon) and Meisa Kuroki as Vexille do a very decent job in expressing emotions.

The film totally looks curious with the execution of CGI and passe cell animation. The effects work by Oxybot is perfect for this type of movie. “Vexille” seems to borrow elements from Ghost in the Shell, Blade Runner and even Dune. (You’ll be impressed once you discover the “Jags”) The one fault that the film has, that somewhat lost its effectiveness is the lack of dramatic impact. The epic is deep enough to support experienced viewers keen but the execution seemed a bit lackluster. It opted to choose for the usual histrionics and missed a amazing opportunity for emotional drawl by exploring the dramatic repercussions of the film’s main premise. Graphics can only carry an involving feature so far.

Overall, I did indulge in “Vexille” more than I did “Appleseed Ex Machina”. I guess I’m so worn to Anime with all the dramatic elements explored that I was somewhat disappointed. The film had all the dynamic potential with its deep premise that wasn’t fully realized.

After reading a short synopsis and the Japanese version trailer of this movie (when looking for something to go spy one evening), I figured I’d check it out. I’m not a tremendous fan of a lot of Japanese anime, though some of it is chilly, and I’m not normally a huge fan of inspiring drama/action in general, but WOW was Vexille a wonderful surprise! If I had to compare it to something, I would say it’s Final Fantasy meets Titan A.E. and maybe a miniature bit of the Matrix.

The animation style was objective handsome! The mix of cartoon with computer-generated animation was a intelligent view to watch. The scenes in this movie had astounding dimension, color, style, and a totally mesmerizing quality. It definitely made it very easy to accumulate myself drawn into this futuristic world.

The chronicle is vast too! Noble character development and a sci-fi element that is at least partially believable (and certainly, if nothing else, engrossing) . Area in the year 2077, the technology is slick, clever, and frigid – yet not so far fetched that you can’t imagine the possibilities suggested. Unplug and take into the fantasy and you’ll have a large time. The movie has a bit of a Matrix quality in that (aside from its positive political elements) there is the strong sense of an underlying (almost spiritual) theme driving the legend but it’s unprejudiced far enough removed from the surface narrative that you can dig for messages if you want to or fair like the slither without getting into the philosophy of the film. I like movies that have multi-faceted elements like this. It made me want to examine it again to try and plot more out of it.

In short, the movie is tremendous! It’s more of a drama than out and out action (so it might strike some viewers as a puny slow-paced in places), but the action is fun and the epic is gracious. The characters are such that you care about them and that draws you even further into the fable. There is also some frosty music in the film, well placed with the various scenes and original enough so that it doesn’t strike as typical. My current songs are “Target Practice” by Asian Dub Foundation, “Bird Flu” by M.I.A. and “The Virus” by Paul Oakenfold. Again, the artwork and C.G. effects are gorgeous and really fun to peruse.

I loved the movie and would seek it again (and will) because I’m ordering it today! Parents who are titillating about the whine will be cheerful to know that there are no sexual themes in this film. There is a light sub context of a adore chronicle prove, but it’s not the main focus of the film. There is sci-fi action and violence but nothing bloody or grotesque. There is a dinky bit of language, thus earning it its PG-13 rating.

If you like anime or objective well-behaved sci-fi, both elements should please. I recommend it.

That’s it?! Sorry but I say impartial do your loot & rec’d it when ABC shows it 2-3 times this Holiday season. The cartoon is grand but it ain’t that grand!

Ok, first of all … it’s Shrek. The adult-like inuendos and child-like references is moral in line with the wit and charm of the entire Shrek series.

I TiVo’d this last year (2007) when it came out for the holidays on TV and I have kept it saved in TiVo this whole time. I eye it at least once a month! It ranks legal up there with the three full-length moviews in the series.

Hysterically droll. You will have to rewind in determined parts because you’ll be laughing so hard you’ll miss some.

My only complaint is that it’s not long enough … the superb ones never are …????

It is said that the role of Peter Venkman was originally written for John Belushi, but we’ll never know how he would have performed in the role. Fellow “Saturday Night Live” alum Bill Murray stepped into the role and ran away with the movie. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd fit into the tale like a glove in Ivan Reitman’s masterpiece, but Bill Murray steals his every scene – which means most of the movie – with a performance tubby of dead-pan, ironic, world-weary, been-there-done-that hilariousness.

He has a sarcastic divulge for every occasion, and the audience is the only one in on the joke every time.

When prospective girlfriend Dana Barrett (played by Sigourney Weaver, who gets a plum opportunity to note off her comedic skills) gets possessed by an depraved demon, she is transformed into a slinky seductress. Bill Murray has advance over to her apartment and in his hilarious dead-pan manner lets the audience know that he recognizes all is not normal with Ms. Barrett. As hilarious and sarcastic as Venkman is, he’s at least a gentleman of sorts and doesn’t rob advantage of the area when the demon tries to seduce him.

The special effects don’t survey like the CGI visions that have been on conceal for a couple of years (this was 1984) yet they’re fraction of the fun. Even so, the special effects encourage the tale rather than up-staging it, and when the movie was initially released I remember howling with the audience after the first special-effect ghost “attacks” Bill Murray and leaves him on the floor in a glistening mess.

This disc is not dated by contemporary references – it’s fair as hilarious today as it was in 1984, and it’ll probably be honest as laughable 100 years from now. The DVD comes with extras that add to the fun, and in the commentary tracks Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis reveal that “Ghostbusters” was an absolute highlight in all of their lives.

I have grown up with “Ghostbusters”, and was a fan of the cartoon series, the toys, and of course, the movies. I unexcited am, and unfortunately, I wasn’t all that gay with Criterion’s laserdisc release of the film. The recount contained a lot of noise, and the matte lines were so visible, that even director Ivan Reitman was upset about it. That’s not the case here. With the release of “Ghostbusters” on DVD, digitally remastered and crammed to the gills with extras, including a live video commentary with Ivan Reitman and Harold Ramis that looks powerful like “Mystery Science Theater 3000″, this makes the purpose of the invention of a DVD player obvious! This DVD is ample! It has everything I hoped for! They(Columbia/Tristar) really outdid themselves with this DVD. It includes numerous documentaries(instead of the usual 1 or 2), production photos, sketch artist drawings, and deleted scenes. Commenting on the deleted scenes, one of them was very peculiar, in which Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray play street bums instead of Venkman and Stantz, with Bill Murray doing his “Caddyshack” riff. It’s unbelievable that the cameras rolled for it, but it’s there. The only thing missing was the inclusion of a scene that found it’s map into the Criterion laserdisc, which followed the three ghostbusters leaving the college and Venkman commenting on how “he’s gonna earn the nobel prize”. Detached, it also becomes intuitively certain why those scenes were reduce once you leer them. Anyway, if you have a DVD player and do not have this DVD, you are really missing out. It’s hard to mediate why anyone would not want to add the “Ghostbusters” DVD to their collection. If you don’t like it, your as plain as those ghosts running around.

“In the Beginning,” produced between the fourth and fifth seasons, packs all the history alluded to in “The Gathering”–and more–into a prequl stuffed to the hatches with the epic doings of Earth, Minbar, Narn, and Centauri in the days before the Babylon stations were built. Infused with epic sweep and storytelling confidence by producer-writer Michael J. Straczynski and his cast and crew, it’s an elegant, compelling addition to the Babylon 5 universe and a dramatic highlight of the series. It’s not an ideal introduction, though, as it gives away the shadowy history slowly revealed through the first three seasons. –Sean Axmaker

The memoir here is that it has been nearly a century since GT ended and Goku went to bid with Shenron. Pan is now an ragged woman who is raising her grandchild Goku jr. Goku bears an uncanny resemblance to his ancestor but lacks his courage (grand like a young Gohan) . Goku gets bullied at school and does not stand up for himself. One day while Pan is lecturing Goku on how he should stand up to those bullies she suffers a heart attack. Goku fearing the worst decides to journy to Mount Pao to obtain the Dragon Balls and wish Pan healthy again. Along the arrangement he faces off against some depraved demons, gains some friends, and even brings out his hidden powers (aka Desirable Sayin) . In the demolish all ends happily as he meets his Ancestor Goku and learns of what accurate courage is and what his future could gain.

This is a simple movie that like I said is light on action and is more about telling a salubrious account. Goku is a lovable character and the villians, although broken-down compared to what his ancestor faced off against numerouse times reveal menacing enough that they are decent foes. Overall this is one of the better Dragon Ball movies and comes recomended. However if you recognize them for the action then you may want to avoid this one.

This is a nicer, more laid-back DB film. It’s about young Goku, not the much Saiyan, his descendant. 100 years after the raze of Dragon Ball Z, young Goku’s grandmother Pan has suffered a stroke and is in the hospital. He sets out on a slither to Mt. Pao, his broad immense grandfather’s home to score the Dragon Ball, which has the power to heal his grandmother. A nice movie paunchy of comedy and emotion. Not a hardcore fighting movie, but it does have a camillo with a beloved Dragon Ball character.

* it’s totally hard to finish watching once you open!

However, please heed that the title is misleading: This is not about Islam. In fact, aside from the plan in one God, the beliefs of Islam are not discussed or explained at all. That’s okay — but the video doesn’t build obvious the distinction between Islam and the Islamic empire.

It’s like the contrast between the Holy Roman Empire and Christianity. The ones ruling were Christians, but that doesn’t mean that all their practices followed the tenets of Christianity. Similarly, although this is about the Islamic empire (including the Ottomans), not everything that the rulers did was Islamic (killing anyone for the sole reason that he has a claim to power is kill in Islam, but this is something some Ottomans did, anyway) . So in watching this, please sustain in mind that this video is describing an empire that was based on the Islamic faith, but which contained kindly and unpleasant elements, impartial like any other empire in the world. Most of all, please do not hold that all that happened in history was sanctioned by Islam. Most rulers throughout the centuries have belonged to some religion, but it doesn’t mean that they always complied with that religion.

That’s my only quibble — that the distinction is not made certain. Otherwise, this is an generous source of information, the best video I’ve seen, about early Islamic culture and achievements. I do recommend it highly.

First the safe. This DVD is incredibly blooming and Kingsley’s express is absolutely apt, he should picture more documentaries. The astronomical sweep of Islamic history is presented in a succinct and eloquent manner, with accompanying visuals that are inspiring. The fable begins in the 6th century CE with the message of Muhammad’s strict monotheism. Struggling to accumulate a foothold in Arabia, he eventually is victorious, conquers Mecca and gains thousands of followers. In one of the most spectacular rises of civilization in the history of man, Islam spreads its faith for thousands of miles from Western Europe to Central Asia. Muhammad’s message is simple and profound, he unites the various Arab tribes into one cohesive group under the banner of one God, smashing idols and reciting God’s words along the design. Muhammad co-opted one of the greatest innovations of man: the sizable power of monotheism and its ability to unite disparate groups of people under a accepted polity and society. The modern Arabic empire spreads expeditiously throughout the peninsula, the Levant, Egypt, the Maghrib, Spain, Persia.

There is absolutely no doubt that Islamic civilization during the Middle Ages was spectacular, rich, and more advanced than European civilization. They preserved Greek philosophy and expanded upon it, developed geometry and discovered trigonometry, and adapted Indian numerals to a decimal system, greatly advancing mathematics. Art and architecture under the empire was simply glowing, breathtakingly glorious. Muslims also developed an anatomy that was outmoded for centuries afterward by Europe, discovered inoculation and formed the precursor to original hospitals. The Islamic empire was so rich and remarkable it became a substantial threat to Christian Europe, who responded with the Crusades. Over one hundred years of conflict ensues in the Levant, until Saladin re-conquers and ends the Crusading campaigns. The record of the Crusades is short, and not historically complete. It is also quite biased in its presentation of details.

The rise and spread of the Ottoman Empire is narrated in the third installment. Their power, spread into Europe, their stout architecture, and their antagonism with the Iranian Safavid Empire are all included. By far the best allotment of this DVD is its telling of the life of Suleyman the Exquisite. He was certainly an fabulous ruler and he receives his due attention in this documentary.

Now the poor. This production is quite biased, sometimes subtly in its choice of pictures, other times not so subtly in its choice of language. What you will not hear about is the repugnant nature of the Arabic conquest. While, according to this documentary the Muslims were led by a righteous faith in God, the truth is many people were slaughtered in the conquests. Many thousands of Zoroastrian Persians were slaughtered; the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) were allowed to possess their faith, but were subject to a special Muslim toll tax that did not apply to Muslims. They also were not allowed to proselytize, and their fair testimony was not as good as their Muslim overlords. Many people were given only three options: conversion, death, or slavery. All peoples have conquered and slaughtered the Other; neither Muslims nor Christians are exempt from such behavior. Nonetheless, some Christians received more toleration than they had had under the Byzantine Empire. But the fact of the matter is that unique religious toleration was birthed in the European Enlightenment, not in the Middle East or West Asia. Muslims did build mighty philosophy and learning, however many of the scholars working in Cordoba and Baghdad were Jews and Christians, albeit studying in still cooperation with the Muslims. Paper was discovered via Chinese slaves brought into the empire, and the slave trade formed an integral section of the economy of the Muslim lands. Although Muslims did not form slavery, which has been around since the dawn of civilization, they did innovate the African slave trade. Several times we hear about Europe “languishing in the Dismal Ages”. No serious historian uses the term Sad Ages anymore, as the past decades have revealed a noteworthy more complex and intellectually bright history. The term has been abandoned for the more appropriate Middle Ages, being as it is the bridge between the ragged and new worlds.

A vast oversight is its short shrift of Iran. Iran is one of the centers of Islamic civilization, the center of Shiism, and a complex and moving culture. The glory of the Safavid Empire and the beauty of its capital Isfahan are briefly mentioned, but there is no word on Shah Abbas, Iran’s ruler at the height of this empire.

Also, this DVD focuses on politics, not religion. You will not regain a deep concept of the myriad forms of Islamic faith in this documentary, certainly a key point of interest for some individuals. The Sufi dervishes were only very briefly mentioned, which is a shame because Sufism is a involving expression of Islamic mysticism, looked at with gigantic suspicion by more conservative Muslims. Neither will you hear noteworthy detail about the schism between the Sunni and Shiites. The roots of this split are told, but the theological differences are not discussed. It was the development of Shiism that was a big impetus for the conversion of the Zoroastrian Persians to Islam, as it incorporated Zoroastrian ideas, merging the Saoshyant with the Hidden Imam to be revealed in later times.

So, it’s biased, but extremely magnificent and informative. This could have been a four or five star documentary, but because of its political correctness it gets three.

Though I usually indulge in Woody Allen’s more unusual work, I’m one of many filmgoers whose heart tranquil belongs to his earlier, anything-for-a-laugh, anarchistic comedies like Bananans, Sleeper, and this one. Rob the Money And Urge was Woody Allen’s first sincere film to announce himself and it remains one of his funniest. Disguised as a documentary, this 1969 film tells the hilarious myth of Virgil Starkweather, the world’s most inept (if stupidly optomistic) thief. Like most of Woody Allen’s early films, everything is played almost solely for the laughs it might provide and nearly forty years later, it all holds up very well. Lots of hilarious stuff in here (at times, this film is the funniest Mel Brooks film that Mel Brooks never made) but my personal celebrated bits would have to include: Virgil’s parents who disguise their indentities by wearing Groucho Marx glasses but will be familiar to anyone whose seen any of Allen’s films, Virgil’s attempt to select a bank is foiled when none of the clerks can read his awful handwriting, another robbery goes improper when a rival gang decides to prefer the same bank at the same time, Virgil’s attempt to hasten from prison by making a spurious gun out of soap is ruined when it starts to rain, the see of Woody Allen on a southern chain gang (and being punished by being locked in the hole with an insurance salesman), and especially the scene where a man Virgil attempts to mug turns out to be not only a childhood school friend but an undercover cop as well. Directing with a wild-anything-goes-spirit, Woody Allen gives one of his first (and best) “born loser” performances as Virgil. Amongst all the madness, the film also presents a bizarrely sweet fancy memoir between Virgil and his wife, who is well-played by the gorgeous (and the sadly no longer with us) Janet Margolin. Always underappreciated, Margolin was one of those forgotten, at times almost painfully vulnerable actresses that one can’t succor but tumble in care for with everytime she appears on veil. Though overshadowed by the later Diane Keaton and Mia Farrow, Janet Margolin was Woody Allen’s first unlikely worship interest (in both film and briefly valid life) and they have a strong chemistry together that adds mighty heart to a wild film. Pick the Money and Rush remains hilarious and will be enjoyed by both fans of Woody Allen and classic film comedy.

This is the best of Woody Allen’s strictly-for-laughs movies. The interview segments which he uses for both comedic and dramatic purposes in many of his films are probably the most fun here, particularly his “parents” who wear disguises. The gags are distinguished better than in his “Bananas” and the more than slightly laughable area doesn’t bog down as in his “Sleeper”. There are no gargantuan factual soapboxes, this movie is objective amusing.

For dedicated sleazologists this has to gross as one of the top DVD releases/restorations so far this year. While readily available in the past on VHS, this digitally remastered transfer supervised by director Stephen C. Apostolof (”A. C. Stephen”) makes veteran all previous releases, including Rhino’s, which looks shockingly flat, blurry, and extinct in comparison. Orgy of the Dull looks like a right movie now (if not necessarily a Valid one), with profitable color balance and saturation, disagreement, brightness, sharpness, and shadow/highlight detail. Exploitation stalwart Bob Caramico’s cinematography looks better than it has any legal to, and the color is so rich it’s hard to contain it’s typically fast-fading Eastmancolor. While IMDb says this movie was in 2.35:1 widescreen (it was advertised as being in `Astravision’), it’s presented chubby frame here. The compositions ogle pleasing, however, without any tiny, cropped feeling (the well-liked `two noses talking’ scenes or other weirdness), leading one to beget that this is the `open matte’ version, which was cropped to widescreen aspect ratio in theaters. At any rate, the print looks sparkling overall, extremely watchable, with only some occasional very light speckling evident.

The movie, written by the famed Edward D. Wood, Jr. (Concept 9, Glen or Glenda, etc.), based on his fresh (!!), is a bright hodgepodge of hokey monster matinee cliches and typical early-1960s nudie-cutie hijinks. Opening with Ed’s standard florid Criswell monologue, Orgy of the Dead’s short-lived anecdote line presents struggling dismay writer Bob and wife Shirley (sexploitation anecdote Pat Barrington/Barringer with flaming red hair), out driving one night looking for an old-fashioned cemetery for “inspiration.” (Barrington’s character is named after Ed Wood’s “slither” alter ego.) Bob loses control of the car, they atomize, then stumble on a graveyard where the Emperor Ghoul (Criswell), the Dark Ghoul (Vampira wannabe Fawn Silver), and their striped-shorts-and-armband-clad beefcake henchmen are presiding over some sort of dance revue/judgment of dreary souls. Coincidentally, all the judged are female and next to naked. For the next 80 minutes, a bevy of voluptuous tiring, babes in G-strings each in turn do a “theme” interpretive strip dance (Indian, Skeleton, Cat, Golden Girl dipped in molten “gold” a la Goldfinger, Zombie, Hawaiian, etc.), complete with plenty of emotive gesturing and breast-jiggling amidst swirling ground fog, accompanied on the soundtrack by vaguely Les Baxter-ish exotica and Henry Mancini/Herb Alpert-ish lite pop cues. (I like the “yahoo wahoo” chant late the Indian dance.) Interspersed with the dances are snippets of those patented non sequitur Ed Wood dialogue exchanges between Bob, Shirley, the Emperor Ghoul, Dark Ghoul, and crummy, dime-store Werewolf and moth-eaten Mummy. Unlike many (most? ) sexploitation movies of the era, the dancers are generally quite buff and several are certifiable knockouts. Barrington remains clothed as Shirley but displays her awesome (augmented) “brand sellers” (Apostolof’s term) doubling as the Golden Girl in a brassy blonde wig. There is a brief, surprising whipping/bondage scene, and it’s revealed that the Dim Ghoul swings both ways when she demands to have Shirley for herself! (Silver as the Unlit Ghoul does a sultry knife-dance but unfortunately no striptease.) TV psychic Criswell appears rather glassy-eyed and reads from clear off-camera cue cards remarkable of the time. It all winds up with a corny “was it all a dream? ” twist ending. As reviled as this movie is by mainstream viewers (peruse reviews on IMDb), sexploitation veterans can vouch that as nudie-cuties go, Orgy of the Tedious is relatively painless; some of the dances are actually mildly erotic (if occasionally out of sync with the music), while Eddie’s convoluted dialogue, Criswell’s hammy declamations, and the otherwise stiff, amateurish acting provide welcome moments of charming Terrible Movie ambiance in the framing scenes.

The extras comprise a trailer (surprisingly looking fair as terrific as the feature) and an comical 20-minute interview with director/producer Apostolof, who recounts his beginnings in the film industry, recalls meeting and working with Ed Wood, and expounds on film technique (!!) and his decision not to go “hardcore”, all in a likeable, laughable manner. Orgy of the Insensible is definitely not for the mainstream viewer; there is zero epic trajectory and relatively small dialogue, mainly unprejudiced lots of topless exotic dancing, making it extremely dull or even unimaginative for many, especially at 92 minutes. If, however you’re already a fan of grade-Z schlock dread and/or cheap sexploitation, Rhino’s pristine recent transfer makes this bizarre, novel delight toddle down smoother than a chilly beer. Primary trash!!

I had this on my Wish List (because I have a general interest in Ed Wood) but changed my mind and removed it–unfortunately not before a friend bought it for me. So what the heck, I understanding, and popped it in the DVD player.

Oh boy. OK, here’s the deal: there’s being an Elvis fan, and there’s buying a styrofoam cup of water he was drinking onstage that someone’s been keeping in a freezer since the 1970s.. There’s being an Ed Wood fan, and there’s paying money for this. A “salubrious” Ed Wood movie leaves you alternatly howling with laughter, dumbstruck, and fascinated by impartial how unfamiliar the guy was. A “dreadful” Ed Wood movie is therefore…wow, I don’t have the words to report it. My thought is that he was marginally keen with thing at best anyway.

Maybe the plight is that I’m a straight woman. Gawk, this movie is about boobies. Lots of jiggling boobies. It goes something like this: Emperor of the Insensible Criswell and his Princess of the Expressionless introduce and call upon a wearisome woman with a foul past to dance for their pleasure. Girl emerges from mausoleum in costume. Girl rapidly loses costume. Girl does an interpretive dance to 60s soundtrack in a G-string or panties. Boobies jiggle! Criswell looks on approvingly! (And that’s creepy moral there.) Chop to our living heroes, failing miserably to act tied up and jumpy. Nick to mummy and werewolf who seem to be from the region of “The Monkees” looking on approvingly (yes, you read that correctly) .

Now, show that ten more times.

So, if you like strip clubs or boobies (or both), or if you like interpretive dance AND happen to be under the influence of clear illegal substances, you might like this.

I am determined that somewhere in Ohio, a grandmother is shopping on Amazon for her kids’ holiday presents, stumbles across this DVD listing, and lets out a blood-curdling roar. Why? Because 40 years ago, she was performing the “Slave Dance.” And 39 years ago, when she was on a bus from L.A. support to her parents’ house, she was thinking, “No one will ever know…because no one will ever indicate that thing again.. I can win that job at Uncle Harry’s store, rep married, and save this whole thing late me…”
